repair or replace air conditioning, NevadaOn a hot summer day in Nevada, there’s nothing better than walking into an air conditioned home. There’s nothing worse than realizing that your air conditioner has conked out when you walk in the door. When that happens, the first order of business is calling your HVAC system contractor. Once he’s on the job, you might be faced with a question: repair or replace the air conditioning? Undoubtedly, he will advise you, but it pays to inform yourself as well.

Important considerations are the age of your system and your warranty. If your air conditioner is less than 10 years old, a repair could well be your best bet. If your unit is newer, you probably won’t gain much energy efficiency by buying a new A/C. Also, a newer air conditioner might still be under warranty. This would cover some — if not all — of the cost of the repair.

On the other hand, there are certain signs that tell you it’s time to replace your air conditioner.

  • It has broken down before: If your air conditioner keeps breaking down, it may be near the end of its life. It’s probably more cost effective to replace the unit rather than continue to pay the repair bills.
  • It’s not an energy-efficient model: Today’s energy-efficient air conditioners generally have a seasonal energy efficiency ratio of 14 or higher, and many have the Energy Star label. An energy-efficient air conditioner can save a significant amount of money on your utility bills. Over time, the savings can repay the cost of the new unit.
  • It’s more than 10 years old: New technology has significantly improved the ability of air conditioners to cool your home better for less money. In addition, air conditioners begin to have issues as they age. Over the years, all the dust, pollen and other particulate matter that pass through your air conditioner can build up, and refrigerant can begin to leak. A new system will start off clean, and regular maintenance can help to keep it that way.
