Domestic Air Conditioning

Home air conditioning (often referred to as AC) is designed to dehumidify and extract heat from living spaces and provide comfort in hot weather.

Air conditioning systems are fully digital with remote controls like television remotes used to control the temperature and fan speeds. Most domestic air conditioning systems combine wall mounted units in each room with a small compressor unit which is located outside. Copper pipes link the two units so that cold and warm air can flow between. The system is typically driven by a 240 volt electricity supply.

The advent of these internal wall mounted units called inverters has transformed the energy efficiency of air conditioning. They can control the capacity and fan speed of the system digitally by matching it precisely to the temperature required. This means that no additional or surplus heat is wasted.

Some air conditioning units on the continent and in holiday destinations give the systems a bad name, as they are often extremely noisy and ineffective. But this shouldn’t prevent you from considering an air-con system for your home. Modern systems are so quiet if sited in the right place that they will not disturb your home or the residential area that you live in.

As summer temperatures are expected to continue to increase during the next decade it seems likely that many households will seek to install some form of air conditioning. In the winter, air conditioning systems have the ability to be run in reverse, thereby also acting as a heat pump. This is an extremely efficient use of electricity in providing domestic heating as warm air will be blown out, instead of the need for the heating of water. As a general guideline, the cost to supply and install domestic air conditioning is around 2000.

More Information:

Using Ceiling Fans With Your A/C? Here’s Why You Should Be

Las Vegas Air Conditioning

using ceiling fans with your a/c, Las Vegas, NevadaUsing ceiling fans with your A/C creates a wind-chill factor to make your home more comfortable in the summer. Most people associate wind chill with breezy winter days when cold air moving over your skin makes it feel even cooler than the thermometer says it is. The same effect happens in the summer if cold air produced by your air conditioner is moved through your home. A ceiling fan circulating air down from overhead generates a wind chill that can make an air conditioned room feel up to four degrees cooler than it really is. This allows you to set the thermostat up a few degrees. Over an entire summer, using ceiling fans with your A/C can significantly cut your cooling costs.

Ceiling fans date to the 19th century but they’re even more useful in the 21st century, when combined with an air conditioner. Here are the basics of selecting and installing your ceiling fans:

  • You need at least an 8-foot ceiling, and the blades of the fan should be no less than 7 feet above the floor.  Position the fan so it’s at least 18 inches away from the nearest wall.
  • Because you want high-volume, low-velocity air circulation, use blade length instead of motor speed to size a ceiling fan. Fan blades up to 36 inches can ventilate 100 square feet or less while a 225-square-foot room requires a fan with 48-inch blades. Sixty inches is the practical limit for rooms that are over 400 square feet.
  • Blade pitch means the angle of the fan blade as it moves through the air. Too much pitch may blow papers around or disturb other activities like dining. Too little pitch doesn’t move enough volume to produce a cooling effect. A slow-speed motor with a 14-degree blade pitch is best for most residential applications.

Like the professionals at Las Vegas Air Conditioning in Green Valley, ceiling fans have a long history of cooling South Nevada homes. for more information about using ceiling fans with your A/C for greater interior comfort.

Perform Your Own Home Energy Audit, And Discover Ways To Save

Las Vegas Air Conditioning

seal leaks after home energy audit, Las Vegas, Nevada A home energy audit helps you save energy by pinpointing the ways you’re losing it. High utility costs and low comfort level are mainly the result of a lack of information. A room-by-room audit fills in the blanks. A professional energy audit, done by an HVAC contractor with specialized technology, is the ultimate option. But if you’re a do-it-yourselfer with a free weekend, you can complete a simple audit and identify many of the more obvious energy-saving opportunities. Then you’ll be  prepared to make the informed decision to call in a professional or make repairs yourself. Here are the elements of a basic home energy audit:

Find the leaks
Up to 30 percent of home energy is lost through air leaks. Finding some of those leaks is as simple as following a draft to its source. For more subtle leaks, use a lit stick of incense and observe the smoke stream around the suspected leak. Check for leaks around door jambs and window sashes, along baseboards, around switch plates and electrical outlets and openings such as attic hatches and fireplace dampers. Outside, find locations where plumbing pipes and electrical wires penetrate exterior walls, and inspect the joint between bricks or siding and the home’s foundation.

Evaluate the insulation

Measure the depth of your attic insulation. Fiberglass insulation should be at least 11 inches deep, and cellulose loose-fill should be at least 8 inches deep. Check for a vapor barrier beneath the insulation to prevent water vapor infiltration. Wall insulation requires a professional for full evaluation, but you can sample it by switching off power to an AC outlet at the breaker box, removing the outlet plate and using a probe to pull some insulation out of the wall void behind the outlet.

Check the ducts
Deteriorating ductwork is a primary source of energy loss in many homes. Wherever ducts are accessible, check for disconnected segments, collapsed ducts or evidence of air leakage such as dust streaks around joints.

Since 2002, Las Vegas Air Conditioning has been Nevada’s source for household comfort and efficiency. Call us about a professional energy audit to take the X factors out of high utility costs.

Drive Heat Pump Performance Through The End Of Summer

Las Vegas Air Conditioning

drive heat pump performance, Las Vegas, NevadaNeedless to say, optimal heat pump performance is essential for home comfort and energy savings in Nevada. To drive heat pump performance through the end of summer, pay close attention to airflow, refrigerant charge and efficient duct design.

A heat pump system provides top-notch energy efficiency by transferring heat from one area to another. During the cooling months, heat is transferred from inside your home to the outside. The process reverses in the winter. Heat is extracted from the outdoor air and transferred to your home. Unhindered airflow and correct refrigerant charge are required for optimal performance. A leak-free duct system, meanwhile, ensures efficient airflow.

  • Airflow: The typical heat pump has a blower and a fan that move air over the evaporator and condenser coils. These components need to be free of debris and blockages for free airflow which, in turn, permits the refrigerant to extract and release heat at optimal efficiency. This keeps your home comfortable and your energy bills low.
  • Refrigerant: The amount of refrigerant in your system must exactly match your system’s specifications. If your refrigerant level is off, your system’s efficiency is reduced. This burdens the system and my cause the evaporator to accumulate ice. Make sure your HVAC technician checks for any refrigerant leaks during your annual tune-up. He should also correct the charge if necessary.
  • Duct design: Though not a component of the heat pump, ductwork is crucial for efficient cooling. A leaky duct system wastes energy and makes your heat pump work harder, decreasing efficiency and even causing it to break down sooner than it should. Bad ductwork could cause you to lose 20 percent or more of your Las Vegas air Conditioning.

Regular heat pump maintenance, and a duct inspection by a heating and cooling professional can yield substantial long-term energy savings. If you would like to speak to an air conditioning professional, contact Las Vegas Air Conditioning. We serve all of Nevada and can help you drive your heat pump performance through the end of the cooling season.

Ductless Mini Split Maintenance: How Your Technician Will Keep Your System Running Smoothly

Las Vegas Air Conditioning

ductless mini split maintenance, Las Vegas, NevadaYour ductless mini split is a highly versatile and efficient system. But even the most efficient system requires maintenance to keep it running smoothly. For optimal performance, you should maintain your ductless mini split the same way you would maintain any other air-source heat pump: A yearly service check is best.

Although many homeowners choose to have their maintenance done at the start of the cooling season, others opt for the start of the heating season, which is very short in this area. Here’s a basic idea of what to expect when your HVAC technician tends to your mini split.

  • The air filter will be removed and cleaned or replaced, depending on the type of filter your mini split has. Between service checks, you should also be checking the filter and making sure it’s clean. A dirty filter can strain your cooling system.
  • The evaporator coils will be cleaned as necessary. The coils in some units don’t need to be cleaned every year. But at the very least, they should be cleaned every other year to prevent the possibility of a freeze caused by dust and dirt buildup.
  • Electrical connections will be checked and cleaned.
  • The drain pan will be checked for moisture, cleared if necessary and cleaned with an algaecide.
  • The fan and blower assembly will be checked and balanced if necessary. This is especially important if your unit is in an area where dirt and debris tend to accumulate.
  • Refrigerant lines will be checked. For optimal performance, your refrigerant charge should exactly match the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • The outdoor condenser will be checked and cleaned. Between service checks, you can do this task yourself. Make sure it’s free of obstructions and debris, which can inhibit airflow. Also make sure the fins are straight.

If you need ductless mini split maintenance, contact Las Vegas Air Conditioning. We’ve provided HVAC services to Nevada residents since 2002.
