We’re often asked by customers, "What can I do to prevent repair problems besides just changing the air filter?" They want to know if the breakdown could have been avoided and how. Here are a few more ways to help ensure your air conditioning system keeps up during the dog days of summer.

Turn the system off when mowing grass nearby.

It doesn’t take much for lawn clippings to enter the outdoor coil, that’s the exterior wall of the outside unit, the air conditioner or heat pump. So when mowing nearby, turn the thermostat to off temporarily. It’s also a good idea to check around the equipment and clear any vegetation or brush away from the sides.

Check to ensure all air vents are open and free from obstruction.

Proper airflow is critical for all air conditioning systems. Return air grills (where room air is brought back to the air conditioning system) are particularly important.

Level the equipment pad.

As the area around the Air Conditioner or Heat Pump settles, the pad that supports the unit can unlevel.  It’s important for continued reliability that the Air Conditioner be level, or in the case of a Heat Pump only a slight slope occurs.  A professional air conditioning company can help in this area.

Pest control can really help.

In many areas around the country, ants and bugs can be attracted to the electrical components within the outdoor Air Conditioner or Heat Pump.  These bugs may actually cause the unit to malfunction and not start.  An environmentally safe pesticide spread around the base of the unit can help prevent insect infestation.

If you don’t have one yet, get a programmable thermostat now.

The EPA estimates that the proper use of a programmable thermostat can save as much as 15% more on the Air Conditioning portion of your home’s energy costs.

For optimum comfort, it’s important for the Air Conditioner to have longer run cycles.

Longer run cycles (cycles = the length of time that the system operates to cool the home) helps remove more humidity from the air and provides a much more comfortable living environment.  Short cycles may not adequately remove moisture from the air and could lead to a "clammy" or "damp" environment. In many instances, the indoor air blower can be adjusted to provide maximum dehumidification, improving overall comfort.  A professional Air Conditioning company can help in this area.

My number one suggestion? Get A Maintenance Agreement.

A PLUS Maintenance Agreement is the most proactive approach to taking care of your central air conditioning system. Regular tune-ups from a qualified expert, just like having your car tuned, are required to keep the system operating smoothly and efficiently… especially during the months when it’s operating the most. Simply having a comprehensive tune-up from a qualified company could save up to 15% on your air conditioning costs during the peak Summer season.

Do Energy Efficient Light Bulbs Really Save You Money?

Air Conditioning Repair

One of easiest and most cost-effective ways to cut your energy bills is by replacing your traditional incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient versions, and there are a couple of different options you can choose from:

But do energy efficient light bulbs really save you money? In general, these alternatives use 25 – 80% less energy and last up to 10 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulb. While the initial cost for energy efficient bulbs is higher, you save money over the course of the life of the bulb, which lasts significantly longer than its conventional equivalent.

To demonstrate how much you can save by switching to energy efficient light bulbs, the table below compares a 60-watt traditional incandescent light bulb against energy efficient ones that provide similar levels of light. The statistics regarding cost are based on the following conditions:

  • 2 hours a day of usage
  • Electricity rate of 11 cents per kilowatt-hour

Which Appliances Cost the Most Money to Run?

Air Conditioning Repair

Appliances that are not operating in an energy efficient way can be one of the reasons for your high energy bills. If you’re wondering which appliances cost the most money to run, here’s a list of the top five:

1.    Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning

The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system comes in at number one on the list. Up to 44 percent of the typical American homeowner’s utility bill will go towards their HVAC costs. According to ENERGY STAR, once your HVAC system has hit the 15-year mark, you’ll probably have to look into upgrading to an energy efficient version. If replacing your HVAC system is not feasible, here are some steps you can take to help your system work more efficiently:

2.   Water Heater

The water heater is number two on the list. According to the Department of Energy  (DOE), water heating can account for about 18 percent of a household’s utility bill. Some tips to reduce your water heating costs include:

  • Consider installing low-flow faucets and showerheads.
  • Repair leaky faucets ASAP – a leaky faucet results in gallons of wasted water.
  • Set the thermostat on your water heater to 120°F (a comfortable hot water temperature for most uses).
  • Insulate your electric hot-water storage tank.

3.   Refrigerator and Freezer

According to the DOE, refrigerators consume the most energy of all kitchen appliances. If your fridge or freezer is more than 15 years old, your best bet is to replace it with a new energy efficient ENERGY STAR model. If that’s not currently an option, you could also:

  • Disable the power-saver switch if your fridge has one. This switch activates indoor heaters to reduce external condensation; if you don’t have external condensation, you don’t need the heaters.
  • Set the ideal temperatures:
    • Refrigerators: 36?F – 38?F
    • Freezers: 0?F – 5?F
  • Defrost regularly – more than 0.25 inch of frost buildup impacts energy efficiency.
  • Check the door seals by closing the door on a piece of paper to see if it’s held firmly in place; if not, you need to replace the seal.

4.   Clothes Dryer

Clothes dryers rank number four on the list. If your dryer is equipped with a moisture sensor, this can be used to increase its efficiency and reduce energy consumption. The moisture sensor turns your dryer off once the clothes are dry. Some other dryer tips include:

  • Dry full loads to maximize electricity usage.
  • Dry towels and heavier cottons separately from lighter-weight clothes.
  • Clean the lint screen after every drying cycle; it improves air circulation and prevents fire hazards.

5.   Dishwasher

The last on the list is the dishwasher, which accounts for around two percent of a typical household’s annual electricity bill. If your model dates from 1994 or earlier, it’s time to replace it with an energy efficient ENERGY STAR qualified dishwasher. Otherwise, here are some tips you can follow to reduce your dishwasher’s energy usage:

  • Don’t rinse off your dishes – scrape off large food pieces and bones. Only soak or pre-wash dishes with burned or dried-on food.
  • Run your dishwasher only when it’s full (but not overloaded).
  • Avoid using the “rinse hold” function for only a few dishes; it uses 3-7 gallons of hot water per use.

To find out which systems in your home are operating inefficiently and costing you money, you should contact a certified RESNET Home Energy Auditor for a home energy audit. This is the best way to learn how to make your home more energy efficient.

How Do You Know If the R-22 Report Affects You?

How Do You Know If the R-22 Report Affects You?

How Do You Know If the R-22 Report Affects You?

% title%R-22, also known Freon, is a chemical refrigerant used in many air conditioning systems. For over 40 years, R-22 was the refrigerant of choice in the Heating and Air Conditioning industry. However, studies have found that R-22 is both a greenhouse gas and a gas known to deplete the ozone layer that protects the Earth from harmful solar radiation. As a result of these findings, R-22 is now being phased out of use in the United States. Keep reading to find out more about the phaseout of R-22 and how it could affect you.

How Is R-22 Being Phased Out?

Since 2010, R-22 has not been used in the production of new air conditioning systems in the U.S. However, R-22 can still be manufactured or imported by HVAC companies to maintain or repair existing equipment. By the year 2020, R-22 will no longer be imported or manufactured at all in the U.S. At that point, the existing supply of R-22 will come from recycled refrigerant collected from old air conditioners.

Does Your HVAC System Use R-22?

If you have an air conditioner that was manufactured before 2010, your equipment will most likely use R-22. However, if you purchased your air conditioner after January 1, 2010, then your air conditioner would most likely not use R22. You can check the type of refrigerant your air conditioner uses by inspecting the appliance’s nameplate, which states the type of refrigerant it uses. This nameplate is often found on the outdoor condenser of your central air conditioning system. Alternatively, you can check your user’s manual or contact your local Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Service Company to find out whether your air conditioner uses R-22 refrigerant.

What Does This Mean for Consumers?

If you own an older appliance that uses R-22 refrigerant, you don’t need to stop using it or replace your system immediately. However, increasingly limited supplies of R-22 have driven the cost of this refrigerant up. The rise in the price of R-22 means that since 2010, the cost of repairing older HVAC equipment has also been on the rise. As R-22 supplies continue to shrink, the cost of making repairs to older appliances will only continue to increase. Furthermore, if your older equipment does need repairs, only a technician certified by the US EPA should service it to avoid accidents that could cause R-22 to leak or escape into the atmosphere.

What Can You Do?

For now, repairs to your current HVAC system can be made using new R-22. While you can choose to replace the R-22 in your current system with an alternative more environmentally friendly refrigerant, this solution is not ideal. Rather than switching refrigerants, HVAC professionals recommend replacing your entire Air Conditioning system once you have determined that the cost of maintaining exceeds the value of the system. When you do replace your air conditioning system with a newer one, you will need to replace both the indoor coil and outdoor unit, as well as clean and flush the refrigerant lines that connect the indoor unit to the outdoor unit, to ensure your new system works properly.

Flooding Could Put the Big Chill on Home Heating and Cooling Equipment

Flooding Could Put the Big Chill on Home Heating and Cooling Equipment

% title%Dayton (June 18, 2014) — The effects of May’s flooding are still being felt by some homeowners, who are finding their air conditioner is not operating properly from exposure to flood waters – with the first day of summer just days away. Although they won’t be needed for some time, furnaces also could be badly damaged by the recently flooding.

According to the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigetation Institute (AHRI), an independent institute that sets standards for the HVAC industry, standing water can damage a home’s heating, cooling, and water heating equipment in ways that are not always readily apparent and put families at risk.

Mark Weaver, General Manager of Stevenson Service Experts in Dayton notes, “It is surprising to see how quickly corrosion takes place in these situations, and the HVAC equipment may work at first, but then you encounter a short or other problem, and it stops working. We’ve had a real spike in calls in the past week or so, and we’ve seen units that have been severely damaged by the floods.”

AHRI notes that “Corrosion begins inside the valves and controls, and damage may not be apparent, even if the outside of the device is clean and dry.”

Weaver added, “What if the valve controlling the flow of natural gas to the furnace fails to shut off when it should. The results could be catrastrophic. That’s why any equipment that has been submerged must be professionally inspected before it can be turned on, and almost always needs to be repaired or replaced.”

Stevenson Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing was founded in 1927; it is located at 799 Space Drive in Beavercreek.

5 DIY Tips for a Warm Home and Low Energy Costs in Winter

Las Vegas

Having a warm home in winter and low energy bills isn’t as tough as it sounds. Here are 5 DIY tips that can help you do it.

1. Weather-strip windows and doors to stop cold air from leaking in.

Leaky doors and windows are a major source of cold air infiltration, leading to cold and drafty rooms.

2. Set your ceiling fan to rotate clockwise.

Warm air rises and by setting your fan to rotate clockwise slowly in winter, you can force that warm air down to help heat your room.

3. Add area rugs to your hardwood or tile floors.

Floors can be responsible for as much 10% of heat loss if not insulated. Area rugs are a perfect solution as they can prevent cold air from escaping up into your room.

4. Set a lower indoor temperature when you’re asleep or away.

A lower indoor temperature results in slower heat loss, leading to higher energy savings. Adjust your temperatures to suit your daily schedule; for example, you don’t want to waste money and energy heating an empty home.

5. Reposition your furniture.

Avoid placing furniture in front of large windows or against outside walls. The subsequent heat loss from your body to the glass will make you feel cold. Putting couches and sofas in front of radiators is also a bad idea, as they will absorb the heat, preventing the room from getting warm.

While these are quick easy fixes to immediate problems, there could be bigger issues with your home that need to be addressed if these are ongoing problems. An energy audit with a certified Home Energy Auditor can show you where the problem areas are and provide you with cost-effective solutions.
