Proper Sizing And Installation — 2 Key Factors In A/C Efficiency

Las Vegas Air Conditioning

proper sizing is vital for a/c efficiency, Las Vegas, NevadaWhen you’ve spent thousands of dollars on a central air conditioner, you want it to serve you well for many years. But even the most expensive and efficient air conditioner can fail to keep you comfortable and wear out prematurely if it’s incorrectly sized and installed. This is why the assistance of an expert contractor is invaluable when you’re replacing your air conditioner.

A system that’s too big or too small

Units in many homes are simply too big, often because their owners have made energy-efficient improvements to their homes over the years. A unit that was OK when a home had no insulation and single-pane windows is too big for a home that has been made snug. A unit that’s too big cycles on and off frequently, causing swings in temperature and failing to remove sufficient humidity. It wastes energy and increases the likelihood of breakdowns.

A unit that is too small also increases the likelihood of breakdowns, as well, simply because it’s not big enough to cool all the space in your home. It stays on longer than it should and works harder.

Sizing your system

It’s up to your contractor to make sure that your system is sized correctly. And it’s up to you to make sure that he uses the correct sizing method. A contractor might just check the BTU figure on the system you have and recommend a unit that’s the same size. Another contractor might recommend a size based only on your home’s square footage. Neither way is the right way.

To correctly size your air conditioner, your contractor should use Manual J. This is software that takes several factors into account. Among them are the size and orientation of your home, your insulation, your windows and the number of people in your family. Your contractor should use a Manual J companion — Manual D — if any significant changes to your ductwork are being made.

Based on these calculations and other factors, your contractor will determine your home’s cooling load and the correct size.

Installing your air conditioner

Although you might consider installing a unit yourself if you’re a handyman, this job is best left to a qualified contractor. Even if you do part of the job yourself, you still need a contractor to:

  • Handle the refrigerant, which, by law, only an EPA-certified technician can do. If you are removing an old system, you need a contractor to remove the R-22 refrigerant in that system.
  • Connect the circuit panel and high-voltage wiring. Your contractor should also verify that your electrical system can meet the demands of your new unit.
  • Inspect your installation.

When you’re ready to have your system installed, make sure the compressor is in a shaded location, preferably on the north or east side of your home.
